Vino de Colonia Independencia
Small-batch wines from the colony founded in 1919 by German winegrowers at the foot of the Ybytyruzú hills.
What it is
In Colonia Independencia (Guairá), founded in 1919 by winegrowing settlers from Baden, Germany, small-batch wines are still made on a small scale. Production is family-run and limited, so ask locally which wineries accept visitors and when before you go. A visit pairs well with a getaway to the waterfalls, lookouts and trails of the Ybytyruzú range and with the town’s brewing tradition.

History
For decades winemaking was the colony’s main activity, with as many as twenty-five wineries; it lost competitiveness and today only a handful still produce, mostly out of tradition. The old grape-harvest festival gave way to the beer festival, the Choppfest.
Did you know…?
The colony bills itself as the “land of wine and sun,” for its vineyards and yerba mate plantations.
