A lake, marshes and floating islands in the largest wetland near Asunción, a Ramsar site and refuge for deer and birds.
What to see and do
- A Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance
- Islands in the marshes (Mocito, Ildefonso, Valdés, Marcelo)
- Herons, ibises, turquoise-fronted amazons and toucans
- Marsh deer, capybaras, caimans and rheas
Access
Access is via a dirt road from the Valle Apuá community in Quiindy (Paraguarí). The park has almost no infrastructure, so go with local baqueanos (backcountry guides) and check the state of the roads and the lake beforehand. The Senate has declared an emergency for the lake because of pollution from nearby industries.
