The Jesuit Route: From San Ignacio to Trinidad
A journey into the heart of the old reductions: the Franciscan church of Yaguarón as a prelude; the Baroque Guaraní woodcarving museums of San Ignacio Guazú, Santa María de Fe, and Santiago; the frescoes of the Loreto Chapel in Santa Rosa; the skies of San Cosme y Damián, where a Jesuit priest observed the stars back in 1703; and a grand finale at Jesús and Trinidad, both World Heritage Sites, with their evening show.
Yaguarón, San Ignacio Guazú, and Santa María de Fe
≈ 263 km
First stop: Yaguarón, a gem of Hispanic-Guaraní Baroque architecture. Continue on Route PY01 to San Ignacio Guazú, Paraguay's first Jesuit reduction, and explore its Diocesan Museum of 17th- and 18th-century woodcarvings. Right nearby, Tañarandy, famous for its Good Friday procession lit by thousands of candles. Finish in Santa María de Fe, a peaceful town with a museum and howler monkeys in the plaza. About 260 km and 4 hours 15 minutes of driving.

Overnight: Santa María de Fe: Santa María Hotel, right on the plaza. Alternative: San Ignacio Guazú, Hotel Doña Angélica.
Loreto, Santiago, and the stars of San Cosme
≈ 128 km
Morning at the Santa María de Fe museum and a visit with the town's embroiderers. In Santa Rosa de Lima, the Loreto Chapel holds Guaraní frescoes beside a red-stone bell tower. In Santiago, a complete altarpiece and Jesuit-era carvings. Arrive in San Cosme y Damián for a daytime visit to the mission and, at night, its astronomical center with telescopes (Wednesday to Sunday). About 130 km.

Overnight: San Cosme y Damián: San Cosme y Damián Lodge & Spa or Posada Turística Rosa Mística.
Jesús de Tavarangue and Santísima Trinidad
≈ 123 km
About 2 hours on the road to Jesús de Tavarangue, the unfinished church with its trefoil arches. Lunch in Trinidad and a full afternoon at the best-preserved reduction: the plaza, main temple, angel musicians carved in stone, and the on-site museum. At night, the light-and-sound show among the ruins (Wednesday to Sunday, check before you go). About 125 km.
Overnight: Trinidad: Posada María, just 200 m from the mission. Or Encarnación, about 30 km away: De la Trinidad Hotel or De La Costa Hotel.
Encarnación and the return trip with a chipa stop
≈ 392 km
Morning in Encarnación: a walk along the Paraná riverfront and, in summer, some time at the beach. Then, head back on Route PY01 with an essential stop in Coronel Bogado, Paraguay's chipa capital. It's the longest day: about 390 km and 5 hours 30 minutes to 6 hours of driving to Asunción. If you'd rather, stay in Encarnación and return by bus or the next day.
Overnight: Asunción (Hotel Guaraní, Casa Corbellani, El Viajero Hostel) or one more night in Encarnación (AWA Resort Hotel, De La Costa Hotel, La Casa de Pedro Hostel).
