A Jesuit chapel with Guaraní frescoes and a painted starry ceiling, beside a red-stone bell tower.
What it is
Santa Rosa is a town of green hills on Route PY01. Its treasure is the Chapel of Our Lady of Loreto, a small diocesan museum that replicates the Holy House of Nazareth: it preserves fresco paintings made by Indigenous artists, sculptures and altarpiece fragments, and a wooden ceiling with stars painted in colonial times. Beside the plaza rises the Jesuit bell tower of reddish stone, about 20 meters tall. It's a short but intense stop on the Misiones circuit.
What to see and do
- Guaraní frescoes and the Annunciation scene in the Loreto Chapel
- The ceiling with painted stars
- The Jesuit stone bell tower beside the plaza
- Hills and rock formations in the surrounding area
Did you know…?
The chapel imitates the Holy House of Nazareth venerated in Loreto, Italy, hence its name.
Its ceiling still has stars painted in colonial times, one of the few surviving examples.
History
The Santa Rosa reduction was founded on 2 April 1698 by the Jesuit Jacobo Ranzonier, who came from Santa María de Fe. Of the Jesuit church, the bell tower and the Loreto chapel survive. In the 1970s the district was known as the Capital of White Gold for its cotton production.
