What it is

Tinfunqué is a huge floodplain in the humid Chaco, a mosaic of marshes, palm groves and grasslands in the Pilcomayo River basin. Route PY12 runs right through it, and in the dry season you can spot storks, herons and ducks from the road and, with luck, guasu puku (marsh deer), aguara guasu (maned wolf) or mborevi (tapir). There's no tourist infrastructure: almost the entire area is made up of private estancias that coexist with conservation. It's a destination for self-sufficient travelers and bird lovers, ideally with a local guide or a prior contact at one of the estancias.

What to see and do

  • Wetlands and marshes of the Pilcomayo basin
  • Waterbirds and marsh deer
  • Landscapes of palm groves and flooded grasslands

Did you know…?

Because almost all of its land consists of private estancias, it stopped being a national park and became a managed resource reserve.

The climate is extreme: from -5 °C in winter to 45 °C in summer.

History

Its name is thought to come from the Nivaclé word Tinjoqee, “natural watering hole.” In 1924 Bolivia founded a fort here, and the area remained in Paraguay after the 1938 peace treaty. It was created as a national park on May 4, 1966 (Decree 18,205), covering some 241,000 hectares; it was declared a Ramsar site in 1995 and, on November 30, 2016, reclassified as a Managed Resource Reserve.

Tips

  • Go only in the dry season and in a 4x4: when it rains, the PY12 becomes impassable.
  • There are no services: bring fuel, water and food, and let someone know your itinerary.
  • Respect private property and ask permission before entering an estancia.

Best time: July to October, in the dry season; dawn and dusk for birds.
