Molino y Silo San José, patrimonio de la vieja Zona Baja
Two 1940 industrial structures that survived the Yacyretá flooding and can now be seen from San José beach.
What it is
Beside San José beach, on the República del Paraguay waterfront, stand the San José flour mill and silo. They date from 1940 and, with a chimney, were part of the production system of an industrial company of the era, one of the most important grain-processing, transport and export hubs in the area in the 20th century. Processed grain left by rail for other parts of the country. When the Yacyretá Binational Entity filled the old Zona Baja to raise the city's ground level, the silo and mill were left in a pit surrounded by earth. Public demand led to their repair and preservation, and the mill was protected as municipal historic heritage by resolution. Today they are a visible reminder of what the city looked like before Lake Yacyretá, and a backdrop for sunset photos on the beach. According to Última Hora (2021), the Memoria Viva photo museum, with about 20,000 images of old Encarnación, began moving into the mill from the station replica.
