Capitán Miranda
A melting pot of settlers about 15 km from Encarnación, famous for its festival of food cooked on plow discs.
What it is
On Route PY06, on the way to Trinidad, Capitán Miranda is home to descendants of Ukrainian, Polish, German, Russian, Italian, Belgian, Finnish, Japanese and South American settlers. It is a green farming district and the site of the airport that serves Encarnación. Its big event is the Plow Disc Food Festival each February: the immigrant communities cook dishes from their home countries, alongside Paraguayan favorites, on recycled plow discs, with music and dancing. A good stop between the city and the missions.
What to see and do
- The Plow Disc Food Festival (February)
- The rural landscape of farming colonies along Route PY06
- 'Caminos del Agua' (Water Trails) circuits promoted by the Governor's Office
- A stop on the way to Trinidad and Jesús
Did you know…?
The plow disc, a farming implement, was turned here into a giant frying pan and an excuse for a festival.
Teniente Amín Ayub González Airport, which serves Encarnación, lies within Capitán Miranda.
History
According to SENATUR (the national tourism office), the colony was formed around 1914 by Ukrainian immigrants and was called Nueva Volyn, after the region of Volhynia. In 1936 it took the name of First Lieutenant Emeterio Miranda, an Encarnación native killed in the Chaco War in 1935 and posthumously promoted to captain. It belonged to Hohenau until it became a district in 1957.
Tips
- The festival's exact date changes every year: check the municipal or Itapúa Governor's Office program.
- Combine it on the same day with the Trinidad and Jesús missions.
Best time: February, during the festival; the rest of the year as a roadside stop.
What to try
- Stews and meats cooked on plow discs
- Dishes from the Ukrainian and Polish communities
