Capitán Meza, colonia alemana y puerto sobre el Paraná
The "mother of districts" of northeastern Itapúa, founded in 1907 by German settlers, with a port on the Paraná.
What it is
Capitán Meza lies in northeastern Itapúa, about 80 km from Encarnación. It was founded in 1907 by Federico Christian Mayntzhusen under the name Yaguarasapá and made a district in 1955. It is known as the "mother of districts" of northeastern Itapúa because several neighbouring municipalities, such as Natalio and Mayor Otaño, split from it. Like other Itapúa districts, it has a population of foreign origin, mostly German, and an agricultural economy. It has a port on the Paraná River; on its bank lies Capitán Meza Puerto, the historic first town of northeastern Itapúa, with a border crossing to Argentina's Misiones province. It is a visit for anyone following the European-immigration trail in the department and wanting to reach the river on a little-touristed stretch.
