What it is

Cerro Hũ (“black hill” in Guaraní) is the type outcrop of the Cerro Hũ Formation, part of the Caacupé Group, of Late Ordovician age. At the base it has coarse to conglomeratic sandstones that give way to medium sandstones toward the top: the sign of a river current that lost energy over time.

Together with the Paraguarí Conglomerate, the most basal unit of the same group, it tells what the region’s rivers were like more than 440 million years ago.

How to visit

It is in the Paraguarí district. It is a rural, scenic hill; ask the municipality about roads and access before you go.
