What it is

The Alto Caapucú (formerly called Southern Precambrian or Pilar Salient) is the northwesternmost outcrop of the Río de la Plata Craton. The rocks include porphyritic granites, orthogneisses, paragneisses, amphibolites, migmatites, talc schists and rhyolite dikes. During the Brasiliano cycle (576 to 480 million years ago) it underwent a major magmatic event.

At the locality of Yaguareté Cuá there are rounded granite blocks of the Caapucú Suite, cores left after deep weathering and later denudation between the Late Mesozoic and the Early Cenozoic. The Cambrian granites of San Bernardino belong to the same suite.
