Named “red tree” for its wood, but famous for its yellow crowns in high summer.
What it is
A large tree of the legume family, with a broad crown and finely divided leaves. In summer it is covered in clusters of golden-yellow flowers, followed by flat pods. Its Guaraní name, “red tree,” comes from the color of its wood, widely used in carpentry and construction. It is one of the signature trees of the Atlantic Forest and is widely planted as a street tree.

Once the lapachos have lost their blooms, the yvyra pytã takes over, painting highways and avenues yellow in December and January.
