Queen palm (pindó)

Syagrus romanzoffiana · pindo

A slender palm with feathery fronds and clusters of orange fruit that feed half the forest.

What it is

A tall, elegant palm with a gray ringed trunk and long, arching fronds. Its clusters of sweetish orange fruit feed parrots, toucans, foxes, coatis and even tapirs, making it a key species in forests and savannas. It grows in humid woodland, along riverbanks and in the open country of the Eastern Region, and it is widely planted as an ornamental.

Did you know…?

It is one of the palms that feeds the most wildlife: when it fruits, its clusters draw parrots, toucans and forest mammals.

Season

Bears fruit clusters much of the year, most abundantly between summer and winter.

Where

Riverside forests and open country in the Eastern Region: Cordillera, Paraguarí, Ybycuí, Itapúa and Alto Paraná. Also common along avenues and in gardens.
