Passionflower (mburucuyá)

Passiflora caerulea · mburukuja

A passionflower with a blue-and-white corona, the star of a Guaraní love legend.

What it is

A vine that climbs fences and trees and produces flowers about 8 cm across with a corona of blue, white and purple filaments. Its orange fruits are edible but bland. Its cultivated relative, the passion fruit or maracuyá (Passiflora edulis), is the one that gives the tart fruit used in juices and desserts. It is pollinated mainly by large bees and bumblebees.

Did you know…?

Many people consider it the national flower, but no law makes it so. In 1936 the Ateneo Paraguayo chose the Paraguayan jasmine in a vote in which the mburucuyá was also a contender.

Season

Flowers and fruits from September to June.

Where

Fences, forest edges and gardens across most of the country. Easy to spot in rural areas of Cordillera and Paraguarí.
