A noble, reddish, aromatic wood, heavily logged and now scarce in the eastern forests.
What it is
A tall tree of the Atlantic Forest with thick, furrowed bark. Its reddish, light and fragrant wood is among the most prized for furniture, doors, instruments and carvings. For that reason it was logged for more than a century, and today few large trees remain outside protected areas. Its international trade is controlled, and the IUCN lists it as Vulnerable.

Blooms in spring, with small greenish-white flowers. Its capsules release winged seeds in winter.
