Black-fronted piping guan
Pipile jacutinga · jakutinga
A black forest guan with a white face and red-and-blue wattle, a threatened jewel of the Atlantic Forest.
What it is
The yacutinga is a large guan, black with a bluish sheen, a white patch on its head and a bare red-and-blue wattle. It eats fruit, especially that of the palmito palm, and disperses its seeds. It is endemic to the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, and hunting and logging have made it Endangered.
Did you know…?
It vanishes very quickly wherever it is hunted, so finding one is a sign of a well-protected forest.
