Broad-snouted caiman
Caiman latirostris · jakare tĩ
A caiman with a wide snout and green-and-gray mottled skin; scarcer than the yacare caiman.
What it is
You can recognize it by its short, broad snout and the blurry greenish to pale gray blotches on its skin. It can grow longer than three meters and shares its habitat with the yacare caiman, though it is less widespread. It prefers marshes, lagoons and floodplains with dense vegetation. It was heavily hunted and is now also protected under CITES.
Did you know…?
Its Guaraní name, jakare tĩ, refers to its nose, the same feature behind its Spanish nickname “ñato” (snub-nosed).
Where
Marshes of the Lower Chaco, Lake Ypoá, the wetlands of Ñeembucú and Misiones, and the floodplains of the Mbaracayú Reserve.
