Argentine black and white tegu
Salvator merianae · teju guasu
The big, spotted lizard that crosses trails, yards and parks on hot days.
What it is
A robust lizard, black with pale bands and dots, the teju guasu can measure more than a meter including its tail. It is omnivorous, eating fruit, eggs, insects and small animals. It is very active in the warm months and in winter retreats into burrows and goes dormant. It isn't dangerous if left alone, though it may bite or lash its tail if cornered.
Did you know…?
In Asunción it is practically the mascot of Parque Guasu, where you can see it crossing the trails alongside its smaller relative, the teju.
Where
Almost everywhere in the country: Asunción's parks (Parque Guasu, Botanical Garden), the eastern reserves and Chaco estancias. Most often seen from spring through summer.
