White-lipped peccary
Tayassu pecari · tañykati
A white-jawed peccary that roams the forest in large, noisy herds.
What it is
This is the white-chinned peccary (tañykati). It lives in large herds that travel long distances in search of fruit, roots and invertebrates, leaving churned-up ground and a strong smell in their wake. It needs vast stretches of forest, so it is among the first species to disappear when forest is fragmented or hunting is intense.
Did you know…?
Three peccaries share the Chaco: the tañykati, the taitetu (collared peccary) and the taguá.
Where
The Dry Chaco (Teniente Enciso, Defensores del Chaco), the Mbaracayú Reserve and the large eastern forests. Keep your distance if a herd appears.
