Bare-throated bellbird
Procnias nudicollis · guyra campana
Paraguay's national bird since 2004. Its metallic call rings through the Atlantic Forest.
What it is
The male is white, with a bare blue-green throat and face. The female is olive green with a streaked breast. It eats only fruit and helps disperse the seeds of forest trees. Its call is one of the loudest of any bird and sounds like a hammer striking an anvil. It is Near Threatened because of forest loss and capture for the cage-bird trade.
Did you know…?
It was declared the national bird by Law 2511 of 2004. The polka “Guyra campana,” popularized by harpist Félix Pérez Cardozo, imitates its call on the harp.
Where
The Mbaracayú Reserve, San Rafael, the Itaipú reserves (Tatí Yupí) and other eastern forests. You'll hear it long before you see it.
