Chaco tortoise

Chelonoidis chilensis · karumbe

A land tortoise of the Chaco's dry scrub, frequently taken for the pet trade.

What it is

A land tortoise with a high brown shell, adapted to dry scrub and forest. It feeds on herbs, fruit and cactus flowers, and in the cold months it buries itself and slows down. It grows and reproduces slowly, so capture for sale as a pet hits it hard. It is listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

Did you know…?

It is one of the most trafficked reptiles in the region. If you find one on the road you can help it cross in the direction it was heading, but never take it with you.

Where

The Dry and Central Chaco: forest edges in Boquerón, Teniente Enciso and Defensores del Chaco, especially after the summer rains.
