Chaco guanaco
Lama guanicoe
An Andean camelid in the middle of the Chaco: the small population of the northwestern dunes.
What it is
The wild relative of the llama, with a long neck and cinnamon coat with a white belly. In Paraguay only a small, isolated population survives, in the dunes and sandy plains of the Chaco's far northwest, protected by Médanos del Chaco National Park. It is one of the rarest mammals in the country.
Did you know…?
Many people are surprised to learn that Paraguay has guanacos. They are the country's only wild camelid and live hundreds of kilometers from the Andes.
Where
Médanos del Chaco National Park (Boquerón). It's a remote area: you'll need a 4x4 vehicle and must arrange your visit in advance with the park rangers, who are based at Teniente Enciso National Park.
