Kamba Ra’anga of Altos
Wooden masks, torches and a theatrical battle between kamba and Guaicurú warriors: a colonial festival still alive in Altos.
What it is
At the chapel of Saints Peter and Paul in the rural community of Itaguazú, in Altos, the kamba ra’anga come out every late June: masked pilgrims fulfilling religious vows, dressed in colorful costumes and accompanied by the kamba kuña in their bright fabrics. After the processions, young people from the community use kapi’i (straw) torches to act out the clash between the kamba and the Guaicurú, a drama with colonial roots that draws thousands of people every year.

Tips
The chapel is in a rural area outside Altos: ask in town about how to get there, and bring a flashlight and closed-toe shoes. Nights are cold. Keep your distance from the torches.
