Guaikuru Ñemonde of Emboscada
Pilgrims dressed in feathers parade through the streets as Guaicurú warriors of old, in honor of Saint Francis Solano.
What it is
In the Minas community of Emboscada, every July 24 the promeseros (pilgrims fulfilling religious vows) dress in feathered costumes and move through the streets making guttural cries, to the beat of harmonicas, cymbals and drums, all the way to the chapel. According to local lore, they re-enact the meeting between Saint Francis Solano and a band of Guaicurú warriors whom the missionary is said to have calmed with prayer, words and his violin. It is one of the most unusual traditions of colonial origin in the country.
