Pilar Hawaiian Party
The country’s biggest beach party: thousands dance on the sand on the banks of the Paraguay River.
What it is
For more than three decades, Pilar has kicked off summer with the Hawaiian Party on its Municipal Beach on the Paraguay River. With flower leis, printed shirts and music until dawn, it draws between 15,000 and 20,000 people from all over Paraguay and the neighboring Argentine riverlands. It’s the perfect excuse to get to know the capital of Ñeembucú, with its riverside promenade, its wetlands and its river cooking, from surubí (a large catfish) to chupín (a hearty fish stew).
