What it is

Mbeju, a griddle cake of cassava starch and cheese cooked in a skillet, is a classic of the afternoon cocido (a toasted yerba mate drink). In General Resquín, in San Pedro department, some fifty women cook it live at its national festival while local, regional and national bands take the stage. Part of the proceeds supports the parish community.

What to see and do

  • Mbeju fresh from the skillet
  • Local cooks in action
  • Live music

Tips

Order your mbeju with cocido quemado, the version made with caramelized sugar. San Pedro has long highways with few gas stations on some stretches: plan to drive by day.

Dates may shift to the nearest weekend.
