What it is

Arete Guasu is the great celebration of the Guarani peoples of the Gran Chaco, shared with communities in Bolivia and Argentina. It coincides with carnival and gives thanks for the corn harvest, the basis of chicha (corn beer). For three days children, young people and elders dance in a circle to flutes and drums, while masked dancers embody the ancestors. In Paraguay it is celebrated in communities such as Santa Teresita (near Mariscal Estigarribia), Macharety and Yvopey Renda, with other Chaco peoples taking part.

What to see and do

  • Masks and costumes of the masked dancers
  • Circle dances with flutes and drums
  • Corn chicha
