Maká weavings
Brightly colored blankets, bags and sashes woven by the Maká people, right on Asunción's doorstep.
What it is
The Maká are an Indigenous people of the Chaco, speakers of a Mataguayan language, who today live mainly in the Nueva Colonia Indígena Maká in Mariano Roque Alonso, in Greater Asunción. They are superb weavers: their blankets, bags, sashes and other pieces combine vividly colored threads with geometric designs. They also make necklaces and small objects that they sell to visitors.
History
Originally from the Chaco, the Maká settled near Asunción in the 20th century, where selling crafts became one of their main sources of income.
Did you know…?
There are also Maká families in the Villa Hayes district (Presidente Hayes) and in Clorinda, on the Argentine side.
Where to buy
In the Maká community of Mariano Roque Alonso, about 15 km from downtown Asunción, and from Maká artisans who sell in the city center. It's their livelihood: pay a fair price and ask permission before taking photos.
