Poyvi loom-woven textiles
Poyvi
Cotton blankets, bedspreads, ponchos and hammocks woven on the loom and hung out in the sun along the highway.
What it is
Carapeguá is the 'capital of poyvi', the loom-woven cotton cloth used to make colorful blankets, quilts, bedspreads, ponchos, hammocks and rugs. The pieces hang on display in front of the town's shops, and street vendors carry them all over the country. Encaje ju lace and ao po'i are also woven in the same town.
History
The household loom, inherited from colonial times, survived as a family trade. The IPA runs a textile Safeguarding School in Carapeguá, and the Casa de la Cultura with its Historical Crafts Museum displays pieces from the region.
Did you know…?
The blankets and hammocks hanging in front of the houses turn the highway through Carapeguá into a shop window of color.
Where to buy
Shops in Carapeguá, on Route PY01 about 85 km from Asunción, and the IPA's Carapeguá textile Safeguarding School. Compare prices between shops: the differences can be large.
