San Miguel woolens

Ovecha ragué

Ponchos, blankets, socks and sweaters of sheep's wool in the 'wool capital'.

Directions

What it is

San Miguel, in the Misiones department, bills itself as the 'wool capital': its artisans spin and knit sheep's wool into ponchos, blankets, quilts, scarves, hats, socks, leg warmers and cardigans. The garments are sold at stalls along Route PY01, about 178 km from Asunción, on the way to the Jesuit missions and Encarnación. In winter it's a must-stop.

History

Sheep farming in the Misiones countryside sustains a domestic textile tradition of home spinning and family looms that today supports many households.

Did you know…?

Every June the Ovecha Ragué Festival — 'sheep's wool' in Guaraní — is held, with music, crafts and lamb dishes.

Where to buy

Stalls and shops along Route PY01 as it passes through San Miguel. Check the label or ask whether it is pure sheep's wool or an acrylic blend.
