Pirayú hammocks
Hammocks woven on upright looms with fringes in a variety of stitches, plus a ñandutí lace with its own distinctive patterns.
What it is
Pirayú weaves the popular Paraguayan hammock on an upright loom: the thread is chosen and dyed, the body is woven and the fringes are finished in a wide variety of stitches. The town also has its own ñandutí, with characteristic randas (stitch patterns). The IPA's Safeguarding School gives demonstrations of the whole process and courses for anyone who wants to learn.
History
The Pirayú textile Safeguarding School opened in 2023 at the local IPA branch, to revive and refine the town's hammock and ñandutí techniques.
Did you know…?
Admission to the School is free; pieces for sale range from about ₲100,000 to ₲300,000, according to the IPA (approximate prices, check before you go).
