Luque filigree jewelry

Openwork jewelry made from ultra-fine silver and gold threads, the specialty of Luque's silversmiths.

Directions

What it is

Filigree is built from very fine silver or gold threads that are twisted, flattened and soldered into lacy openwork designs, like metal lace. Luque's jewelers make earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets and rosaries, often with motifs that echo ñandutí lace. The town is packed with jewelry shops and workshops offering traditional pieces and new designs at reasonable prices.

History

Filigree metalwork arrived with European colonial tradition and took root in Luque, which calls itself the 'city of art' and the 'city of music' for its jewelers and its harp and guitar makers.

Did you know…?

Luque served as the capital of the Republic from February 22 to December 7, 1868, during the War of the Triple Alliance.

Where to buy

Jewelry shops and workshops in central Luque, a few minutes from Silvio Pettirossi Airport. Compare prices at several workshops and ask about the metal's fineness (925 silver or 18k gold).
